Rummy Rules — Everything You Need to Know

A pure sequence is a run of three or more consecutive cards from the same suit with no Joker substitution. For example: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ is a valid pure sequence. A♠ 2♠ 3♠ is also valid. Every winning Rummy declaration requires at least one pure sequence — without it, your declaration is invalid and penalised. This is the single most important rule beginners must internalise.

An impure sequence uses a Joker (printed or wild) to substitute a missing card in an otherwise consecutive run. Example: 4♦ Joker 6♦ — the Joker stands in for 5♦. Impure sequences count toward your hand completion but cannot substitute for the mandatory pure sequence. You can use as many impure sequences as your remaining cards allow.

A set is three or four cards of the same rank but different suits — for example: 7♠ 7♦ 7♣. You cannot use two cards of the same suit in a set (so 7♠ 7♠ 7♦ is invalid). Jokers may be used in sets. Sets count toward your winning declaration alongside sequences, but you must still have that mandatory pure sequence for your declaration to be valid.

89pkr Rummy uses two types of Joker. The printed Joker (a special card in the deck) can substitute any card in any sequence or set. The wild card Joker is randomly selected at the start of each game — all cards of that rank across all suits become Jokers for that hand. If you declare without a valid hand — missing the mandatory pure sequence, or with an invalid set or sequence — you receive an 80-point penalty and lose the round immediately, regardless of how close your hand was to completion. Dropping means voluntarily exiting the round before declaring. A First Drop (before picking up your first card) costs 20 points. A Middle Drop (after at least one draw) costs 40 points. The Last Two rule applies in some formats — when only 2 players remain, dropping results in maximum penalty points.
